Florizontal® Hive FAQs

Do you have a variation with mesh bottom boards?

At this stage we only have the one model with a solid base.

How do you manage SHB (Small Hive Beetle)?

In the eight years we have been beekeeping we have always used Apithor and are yet to have SHB issues in any of our hives. We have fellow beekeepers whose hives were constantly being overrun with SHB. We switched them a solid bottom board to replace their mesh ones, and an apithor. Within days the SHB were virtually eliminated. Needless to say, they are converts.

Do you supply stands for your hives?

Not at this stage.

Do you supply the Langstroth frames?

The Florizontal® was developed to provide beekeepers with existing Flow Hives to move their frames and bees to a more manageable configuration if they found the lifting required for regular brood inspections to be prohibitive.

If you are new to beekeeping and like the idea of the Flow honey extraction system but have physical limitations, you can purchase the super frames from Flow here.

The 8 full depth Langstroth frames required for the brood section are available through your local bee supply store.

Why do you advise waiting to add the bees if oiling the hive?

I am aware of a situation where a new beekeeper added a package of bees with a queen a few days after the final coat, which included the interior surfaces. Three days later , after the bees had released the queen from her cage, the whole colony absconded.

We use Bruynzeel Plywood for both our Horizontal and Florizontal® Hives!
